Description
Laser therapy is a gentler way to treat gum disease. Instead of making incisions in the gums, the LANAP protocol eliminates diseased tissue while leaving healthy tissue intact. It often takes just two office visits, one to two weeks apart, so patients have improved oral health much faster. With this procedure, patients don't complain about pain, discomfort, sensitivity to hot and cold, or bigger gaps between their teeth.

00:00:00.067 --> 00:00:03.166
LANAP is a new treatment modality
to treat gum disease.
00:00:03.233 --> 00:00:07.973
Gum disease is a chronic gum infection
that affects surrounding tissue and bone
00:00:08.040 --> 00:00:09.833
around natural teeth and implants.
00:00:09.900 --> 00:00:12.080
In the past, we would treat gum disease
00:00:12.147 --> 00:00:14.633
by what we call
conventional osseous surgery approach,
00:00:14.700 --> 00:00:18.893
where we flap gums open,
clean infection, position gums back.
00:00:18.960 --> 00:00:21.700
Laser-assisted new attachment protocol,
so-called LANAP,
00:00:21.767 --> 00:00:23.999
is less invasive,
more predictable approach.
00:00:24.067 --> 00:00:29.733
The benefits of laser LANAP procedure
versus conventional periodontal treatment
00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:34.167
is how quickly we can get patients
to the state of health.
00:00:34.567 --> 00:00:39.367
It usually requires two visits,
about 1 or 2 weeks apart,
00:00:39.434 --> 00:00:41.866
and about
one-and-a-half, two-hour appointments.
00:00:41.933 --> 00:00:45.200
Most of the people though
might have some discomfort for first day,
00:00:45.367 --> 00:00:49.200
but it's really manageable
by over-the-counter pain medications.
00:00:49.433 --> 00:00:54.860
LANAP is actually one of the first
FDA-approved lasers
00:00:55.060 --> 00:00:59.867
that actually makes your bone grow
in some situations.
00:01:00.033 --> 00:01:02.900
By doing minimally invasive approach,
00:01:02.967 --> 00:01:06.680
we're actually regenerating
bone and tissue around the teeth.
00:01:06.767 --> 00:01:09.333
Most of the patients
will report to us after laser
00:01:09.400 --> 00:01:11.800
that they didn't experience
that much discomfort,
00:01:11.867 --> 00:01:14.467
and they were surprised
00:01:14.600 --> 00:01:17.000
how easily and tolerable
the procedure was.
00:01:17.067 --> 00:01:19.600
My preference to treat the gum disease
00:01:20.037 --> 00:01:24.066
for patients would be always
number one is going to be LANAP.
00:01:24.133 --> 00:01:25.320
It's easier for patients.
00:01:25.387 --> 00:01:28.340
Patients don't complain about discomfort,
00:01:28.933 --> 00:01:31.700
bigger gaps between teeth,
sensitivity to hot and cold,
00:01:31.767 --> 00:01:34.833
which were caused by
conventional surgery in the past.
00:01:34.900 --> 00:01:37.400
First 10 years of my practice,
I was doing conventional surgery,
00:01:37.467 --> 00:01:41.467
and every single patient
was complaining on pain, discomfort,
00:01:41.567 --> 00:01:43.800
sensitivity to hot and cold, bigger gaps.
00:01:44.733 --> 00:01:49.366
I was asking myself,
what other alternative modalities
00:01:49.433 --> 00:01:52.933
to treat patients
in less invasive approach?
00:01:53.067 --> 00:01:58.333
This is when I started training
in laser-assisted new attachment protocol.
