LANAP

When gingivitis is left untreated, it progresses to periodontal disease, a dangerous health concern.

LANAP® is an FDA-cleared laser technology that allows our dentist to remove diseased gum tissue quickly and with minimal pain.

See how MK Periodontics & Implant Dentistry P.C. in Nutley and Florham Park can treat your gum disease and improve your overall oral health.

Treating Gum Disease

If your gums are swollen, red, bleeding, or receding, you may have gum disease. As gum disease progresses, it can create periodontal pockets between your teeth and gums. These pockets collect debris and bacteria and can ultimately lead to tooth loss, heart disease, and lung disease.

Periodontal treatment involves three steps:

  • Removing debris and diseased periodontal tissue
  • Reattaching healthy gums to teeth
  • Creating an at-home oral care routine to prevent reinfection of the periodontal tissue

The traditional surgical method of treating gum disease involves the use of a scalpel to cut away the infected tissue. The gum tissue is then reshaped around each tooth and sutured in place. Though this is an effective treatment for gum disease, it results in painful downtime. LANAP is an alternative treatment that has minimal side effects.

Illustration stating a tiny laser fiber precisely targets diseased tissue and kills germs. The roots are cleaned and a second laser stimulates new gum attachment.

What Is LANAP?

LANAP® is an acronym for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure. This laser technology is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment for gum disease that results in the regeneration of gum tissues.

When compared to surgical treatment of periodontal disease, LANAP offers patients several benefits, including:

  • Less pain
  • Less bleeding
  • Less sensitivity
  • Less swelling
  • Less gum loss
  • Little downtime
  • Comfortable healing process

Dental Professionals Agree
LANAP Is a More Comfortable Treatment

94.4% of surveyed participants said that their patients reported less pain with their Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure compared to patients who received traditional periodontal treatment.

My experience at MK was ultra positive; the office was clean & modern, everyone was friendly and considerate. Mark did a laser procedure that my last perio didn't even tell me existed, and didn't burn a hole in my pocket. No complaints!

How LANAP Works

The total recovery time is about 24 hours.
The total recovery time is about 24 hours.

Consultation

Your periodontist will discuss your medical history and determine the level of treatment each tooth will need at an initial consultation.

Remove Infected Tissue

At your appointment, a laser is used to destroy the diseased gum tissue in the periodontal pockets while leaving healthy tissue unharmed. The laser kills the infection-causing bacteria and creates a stable environment for healing.

Remove Tartar Buildup

Your periodontist will then use scaling techniques to remove the tartar buildup from your teeth and root planing to smooth your tooth roots, allowing the gums to reattach.

Reattach Gums

The laser is then used to reattach the gum tissue back to the tooth root. This keeps the tooth securely in its socket and encourages fast healing.

This dentistry service typically takes about an hour, depending on how extensive the gum disease is. You may have to make two appointments, one for each side of your mouth, if the gum disease is widespread.

Following treatment, you can resume your normal daily activities. The total recovery time is about 24 hours. Don't brush or floss your teeth for about 7-10 days after your treatment, and be sure to follow all aftercare instructions given to you by your periodontist.

Dr. Khaimov came in, asked some questions, even diagnosed an issue I had with my tongue that NO ONE had ever caught before. He checked me out and much to my surprise, told me he believed he could help get my gums healthy and no removal of teeth was necessary. Like, what?! And the LANAP treatment he suggested is brilliant. I can't wait to get started. Coming here was the best decision I've made all 2020!
